Summary

I want to host a fun, inspiring and charitable event allowing real people to share real stories of struggle and success.

The Scoop

Many of you know that I teach web design/development and technology classes (an incredible and eye-opening experience), but I'm not sure if you know my real passion: independence, empowerment and art.

I am convinced that we are all sitting on powerful and great ideas. We may be scared to execute, or feel we aren't good enough or we simply don't know how to start. I know I've felt that way. Some of my endeavors have failed miserably and others have succeeded great. It's scary stuff.

I continually sense fear, confusion and anxiety about the economy and, specifically, handling your job/career/business. There are options, but no way to discern what actions to take. Another frustrating thing is that there is a ton of crap available preying on people's fears and ignorance.

Me? I simply believe in exposure, inspiration and execution.

I want to try something new, so I'm hosting an entrepreneur/inspiration/brainstorming event.

And all proceeds go to charity.

The goal is to bring together friends, colleagues, students, business leaders, technology leaders, entrepreneurs, etc to share their stories of success, failure, struggle, excitement, hope, loss, pain and joys. I want real people talking about real obstacles and struggles. I have some amazing friends who will be presenting from different walks of life, ie. PR, Design, Entrepreneurship, Technology, Business, Marketing, etc.

I want to encourage artists, musicians, entrepreneurs (tiny or huge), moms, dads, students, employed, unemployed, etc to join this event. Just bring an open mind, an appetite for learning, questions, and a love for independence. Actually, a pen and paper wouldn't be too bad either ;)

If you want to spread an idea, start a business, create a band, begin a label, try anything new, this event is for you.

In addition to the event, you'll take home two gift books:

Rework

The New York Bestseller written by the founders of 37 Signals (a ridiculously successful small software firm).

"If given a choice between investing in someone who has read REWORK or has an MBA, I'm investing in REWORK every time. A must read for every entrepreneur." -Mark Cuban, co-founder HDNet, owner of the Dallas Mavericks

  • "ASAP is poison"
  • "Underdo the competition"
  • "Meetings are toxic"
  • "Fire the workaholics"
  • "Emulate drug dealers"
  • "Pick a fight"
  • "Planning is guessing"
  • "Inspiration is perishable"

Linchpin: Are You Indispensable?

"Thanks for reading and thanks for your support. Linchpin is the fastest-selling and most successful book of my career. My goal is to shake things up and spread ideas that matter, and I can't do it without you." - Seth Godin

"It's easy to see why people pay to hear what he has to say." -Time

"Thousands of authors write business books every year, but only a handful reach star status and the A-list lecture circuit. Fewer still-one, to be exact-can boast his own action figure.... Godin delivers his combination of counterintuitive thinking and a great sense of fun." -BusinessWeek

"This book is a gift." -Jacqueline Novogratz, Founder, The Acumen Fund

"If Seth Godin didn't exist we'd need to invent him-that's how indispensable he is! You hold in your hands a compelling, accessible, and purpose-filled book. Read it, and do yourself a big favor. Your future will thank you!" -Alan Webber, Founder, Fast Company

"This is what the future of work (and the world) looks like. Actually, it's already happening around you." -Tony Hsieh, CEO, Zappos.com

Event Details

We'll start at 10, have lunch (provided), and go to about 3ish. Afterwards will be a time to relax, mingle, network, etc. I will be announcing presenters throughout the upcoming weeks. I can assure you that we will have a lot of fun. It will be engaging and fun with a mix of presentation and conversation. This will NOT be "sit in your chair watching powerpoint" all day.

It's only $40 and includes the 2 brilliant influential books: "Rework" and "Linchpin: Are You Indispensable?".

All proceeds (after expenses) from the event will go to a mentoring charity, possibly:

  • Breakthrough Austin
  • United Way
  • Communities in Schools
  • Austin's Children Shelter

(Feel free to speak up if you have a charity preference.)

This will be limited seating, so make sure to sign up early, like NOW.

I am really excited about this event and cannot wait to see what unfolds!!

Mike
